Movers in Melrose, MA
Old houses make up most of Melrose, many of them Victorians with wide porches, steep attic stairs and rooms that were furnished a long time ago. We move plenty of families in from Boston and Somerville, and a fair number of longtime owners downsizing out.
Victorian houses and the furniture inside them
Older Melrose houses can have a grand front staircase and a narrow back one, along with third-floor rooms reached by a tight turn. Heavy antique pieces, like a solid wood armoire or a marble-top dresser, are common. We wrap those in blankets, take off what comes off, and walk them out slowly. If something won't make a turn, we'll tell you before we try.
Porches are great to live on and tricky to move across. Wide front steps help, but painted floors get slippery in rain, so we lay down protection and keep things moving under cover when we can.
Attics and basements in these houses tend to hold more than people expect. Put them on your inventory list, even if most of it is going to junk removal or storage instead of the new place.
Main Street apartments and the train stops
Downtown along Main Street, there are apartments above shops and some mid-size buildings. Those moves are shorter on furniture and longer on carrying from the truck. Check with the city about any parking permit for Main Street or your side street, and we'll help figure out a good spot for the truck.
Melrose has three Commuter Rail stops on the Haverhill Line (Wyoming Hill, Melrose/Cedar Park and Melrose Highlands), and the Orange Line at Oak Grove sits just over the Malden line. That's a big reason people move here from the city, and it means plenty of our Melrose jobs start in a Somerville walk-up or a Boston elevator building.
For those, we plan two very different ends. The city side is about permits, elevator windows and stairs. The Melrose side is usually a driveway and a porch, so unloading tends to go faster than loading. We'll explain how that affects the hours in your estimate.
Moving to Melrose from the city
When people move from a city apartment to a Melrose house, the truck usually leaves fuller than they expected, because the new place has room for everything that was in storage. Tell us about storage units too, and we can do both stops on one day.
Blankets, shrink wrap, dollies and basic furniture disassembly come with the move. You'll get a written estimate first, based on what you list on our two-minute quote form.
If you'd like help unpacking at the new place, that's available too, along with TV mounting and putting together any new furniture you bought for the extra space. Most people only find out how much they've been storing in a city closet when it's all on the new living room floor.
Before you move in Melrose
- Measure the turn on your attic or third-floor stairs before booking.
- Put attic and basement contents on your inventory, even items headed to junk removal.
- Check with the city about parking on Main Street or your side street.
- Mention storage units so we can do both stops in one day.
- Clear wet leaves off porch steps the morning of a fall move.

Melrose moving questions
Can you move heavy antique furniture out of an older Melrose house?
Yes. We wrap it in blankets, take off legs, mirrors or tops when they come off, and carry it slowly. If a piece can't make a turn, we tell you before we try.
We're downsizing from a big Melrose house. Can you help with what we're not keeping?
Yes. We can add packing, junk removal and storage, so the things you're keeping go to the new place and the rest is handled in the same plan.
Do you move people from Boston apartments into Melrose houses?
Often. We'll plan the Boston side for parking and elevators, and the Melrose side for porches and stairs.
Leaving or moving to Melrose? A rough list is enough for a written price.
