Moving on September 1 in Boston

A huge share of leases in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Allston-Brighton end on August 31 and start on September 1. Thousands of people move on the same day, on the same narrow streets, with the same rental trucks. It can go smoothly, but only if you plan early.

Book early

Movers fill up their September 1 calendar in the spring and early summer. If your lease turns over then, book as soon as you have the new address. If your landlord allows it, moving on August 30 or 31, or a few days into September, is much easier and often cheaper.

Reserve the curb and the elevator

On September 1 every truck in the neighborhood is looking for the same space. In Boston you need a street occupancy permit and signs posted 48 hours ahead. Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline have their own permits. Our permit guide covers how each one works. If your building has an elevator, reserve your slot now, not in August.

The gap between leases

Often the old lease ends at noon and the new one starts the same afternoon, or the new place isn't cleaned yet. Ask both landlords for exact times. If there's a gap, short-term storage on the truck or in a unit can bridge it, but it has to be planned in advance.

Mattresses and junk

Massachusetts doesn't allow mattresses in regular trash anymore, and Boston's curbs are piled high around September 1. Check your city's pickup rules for mattresses and furniture before the week of the move. We can haul away junk as an add-on if you ask ahead of time.

The week before

Pack everything except what you use daily. Defrost the freezer. Take photos of the old apartment for your deposit. Confirm the time with your movers and send them the permit and elevator details. Keep cash or a card ready for the elevator deposit some buildings ask for.

Common questions

Why does everyone in Boston move on September 1?

A large number of leases, especially around the universities, run September to August. It's been the local norm for decades.

How early should I book movers for September 1?

As early as you can. Spring or early summer is best. By August the good slots are usually gone.

Is it better to move a day early?

If your leases allow it, yes. August 30 or 31 has less traffic, more parking and more crews available.
